Lessons from Drag Queens

Anyone who knows me well knows that I am slightly obsessed with Drag Queens. I have just finished watching Werq The World.

The messages were that you have to accept yourself, accept that you are who you are and to not care what anyone else thinks. Accept that you are the best version of yourself and do not compare yourself to anyone else. I loved this series. It was much more intimate than Drag Race.

Last Saturday I mentioned that I was going to the Bryan Adams Experience at Cafe Roux in Noordhoek. There were supposed to be 3 women and Norm, but Norm could not go, then we were 4 women and then 2 of the women could not come so I ended up giving a couple I know the tickets.

Tam came by a bit early as I was loaning her some things to take on an upcoming trip to the UK and when we left we bribed the dogs by tossing biltong and running. But Tam had parked right up close to the garage door so it would only open a little bit. We contemplated going back in and running the gauntlet of the dogs, around through the front of the house, but it would have had to be both of us as Finn would not have been happy about Tam on her own. I do not deal well with decisions under pressure and I could think of no alternative. Next thing I know Tam has dropped down to all fours and managed to leopard crawl under the partially open garage door. I would have been dead after that! Every time I think about it I laugh.

We arrived at Cafe Roux and decided to sit outside in the open air to have a bite to eat.

I had not eaten all day and was ravenous. I decided to have a pizza because I am so messy, it seemed less likely to end up in my lap than the pasta which was my other choice. I chose the ‘cipolla’ with bacon, thyme, red onions, avocado and crispy onions. I do not like thyme and they were happy to leave it off. It was thin and crispy and the toppings were good, a very tasty pizza.

Just before 8 we went into the venue to take our seats.

We had a good view other than a pole but we could see the stage fine.

They sang all of the favourite hits and we all clapped and sang along happily.

I noticed that I was constantly moving and I did not try and ‘mask’ or stifle my twitches. I alternated between finger drumming to toe tapping to just generalised wiggles. It is interesting how once you become aware of something it is so obvious that you cannot understand how you were NOT aware of it before.

Becoming ‘conscious’ of what I am feeling and where in my body is part of my guidance from the Neurodiversity therapist:

What do you feel?

Where do you feel it?

This week we did major renovation to the house in that we replaced all of the windows and doors at the front of our house. We have a lot of windows and doors so we decided to do it in 2 phases. Here are the before pics.

Norm had to remove everything from the front of the house as they put up scaffolding to reach the top windows.

It was loud and chaotic having random men roaming around the house and Finn was a bit unsettled by it. He only misbehaved a few times, one guy was kneeling down in the window and Finn shoved his cold nose down the back of his pants to give a sniff (dogs do not know it is rude) and he jumped up on one guy and tried to nip his elbow but not fiercely (the nippee may have had a different view on the situation).

Norm did one of his brilliant voice over videos at the end of day 1.

The next day they stayed until almost 8.30pm because they struggled fitting the front doors.

These are the doors before.

To get the double doors for the upstairs balcony they had to go over the railing as it was too big to clear our inside stairs. It was hair raising as that railing is so dodgy.

Then once they finally left, Norm moved back the TV unit but did not pay attention and the TV toppled over right as Finn ran towards it and it landed directly on his head. I screamed, Norm screamed because I screamed but it was too late. The damage was done. Finn seemed unbothered. I was very, very bothered.

Norm did a voice over but it is a bit Blair Witch shaky in a few spots so look away if you get dizzy easily.

The next day I worked with the new doors open and I forgave him seeing as he is buying a new telly. Norm, not Finn.

He also bought me flowers to soften me up as I had been a bit unbearable.

I do not deal well with noise and I do not deal with change either so I was strung tighter than a violin. I finally got a chance to ground myself on Thursday after work and Finn came and sat at my head and Lola at my feet. They know when we need them.

Meanwhile Pixie was freaking out about the noises and Blue was clingy and grumpier than usual.

Today I flew from Cape Town to George to visit Lily, Josh, Amelia and Trevor.

Josh’s Mom is back in the UK and I am in her room. It was still 30℃ at 5:30pm when I landed which is 86 in Yankee degrees. It is crazy hot. I usually sleep in the nude with the air conditioning on in our room every night year round, set to 16℃ in the summer and 17℃ in the winter to cater for Norm’s delicate nature. He sleeps in full pajamas and sometimes a hoody. To me it is just right. I am one hot natured person unfortunately.

Lily cooked a beautiful dinner of roast chicken and potatoes, rice, green beans and carrots. Millie was hilarious. She wanted to chow and was sucking on green beans and carrots. We had shabbat and Josh did the prayers. We had proper challah. Then Lily took a very tired Millie off for bed. The power was off from 6-8pm.

I hope we have a cooler day tomorrow I did not bring any summer things at all, not even a pair of flip flops.

Until next time, Kisses from the Kitten xoxoxoxoxo
